Small-mammal shelter and run guide

Custom Modular Rabbit and Guinea-Pig Runs in 304 Stainless Steel

Plan a generous shelter-and-run system around usable floor area, solid resting surfaces, predators, weather, cleaning, modular assembly and daily care.

  • Written for bird owners and cage planners
  • Species and site are specified first
  • Development status remains explicit

The relevant stainless product for rabbits or guinea pigs is a generous shelter-and-run system—not a small decorative cage with a wire floor. Bật Mạnh is developing made-to-measure 304 stainless steel run modules around usable ground area, permanent shelter access, predator and escape control, weather, solid resting surfaces and human cleaning access.

Space and welfare requirements lead the quotation

These projects are not offered from one universal size chart. The animal group, local climate, permanent shelter, floor, perimeter, roof and daily care routine must be specified before panel dimensions and shipping modules are frozen.

Why this is not a resized bird cage

Rabbits and guinea pigs use ground area, shelter and social space differently from birds. Their feet should not live on exposed wire mesh, and a raised sleeping box does not replace an exercise area. The RSPCA rabbit environment guide recommends at least 3 m × 2 m × 1 m of living space for two medium-sized rabbits, with a shelter permanently connected to the exercise area.

The RSPCA Australia guinea-pig guidance describes a solid floor, shelter, attached exercise area, predator protection and temperature control. Those published dimensions and principles are welfare reference points, not Bật Mạnh stock-product dimensions and not permission to ignore stricter local or professional advice.

Rabbit and guinea-pig projects still need separate briefs

QuestionRabbit runGuinea-pig run
MovementRoom for running, hopping, stretching upright and exploring, with clear routes between zones.Large usable floor area with sheltered routes and cover that supports normal movement without exposed open spaces.
EscapeDigging, jumping, chewing and pushing at edges or doors must be considered.Smaller body size and low gaps require carefully controlled panel bottoms, joints and door thresholds.
WeatherDry, draught-controlled shelter plus shade, ventilation and protection from temperature extremes.Particular care around heat, cold, damp and exposure; a secure indoor alternative may be required by climate.
FloorSolid, non-slip resting and movement surfaces with a deliberate ground/digging strategy.Solid floor and bedding area; open wire flooring is not proposed as the living surface.
AccessDoors and separation options sized for safe handling, cleaning and inspection.Low hiding and shelter areas still need to be reached without dismantling predator protection.

Specify the shelter and run as one connected system

The sheltered zone should remain dry, ventilated and protected from excessive heat, cold, wind and rain. The animals should be able to move between shelter and exercise space without relying on a person to carry them for every period of activity. Doorways, ramps and thresholds must suit the identified animals and remain safe after bedding is added.

A Bật Mạnh quotation may cover the external 304 frame, mesh or bar panels, roof panels, doors, locks, removable dividers and selected protection sheets. Timber sleeping boxes, insulated shelter construction, bedding, ground works, electrical heating and local weatherproofing should be itemised separately rather than implied by the run price.

Predator resistance is only as strong as the site boundary

Heavy-gauge mesh and strong fastenings are useful, but predators can also dig under, lift a weak roof, manipulate a simple latch or exploit a wall connection. Tell Bật Mạnh which dogs, foxes, cats, birds of prey, snakes, rodents or other risks occur locally. Local advice should determine whether the run needs a solid base, buried perimeter, outward apron, full roof or an additional night enclosure.

  • Control openings at the main mesh, corners, joints, door sides, threshold, roof and shelter connection.
  • Protect cut ends and fasteners from chewing and animal contact.
  • Use positive latches that cannot be pushed open by the occupants or lifted easily by a predator.
  • Keep shelter ventilation secure rather than leaving a large unprotected opening.
  • Inspect the ground boundary after rain, burrowing, settlement or movement of a mobile run.
  • Provide a procedure to isolate a damaged module until it is repaired.

Floor, bedding and drainage must work together

A solid floor is not automatically comfortable if it is slippery, wet, hot or impossible to bed. A natural-ground run is not automatically better if it becomes muddy, contains toxic plants, allows digging escape or cannot be cleaned. The project brief should identify the solid resting zone, bedding retention, drainage fall, protected earth or grass area, washable surfaces and how waste is removed.

Metal mesh may be used at selected vertical or perimeter positions after the opening is specified, but not as a default exposed living floor. Removable floor or wall-protection panels should not create an escape opening during operation. Long runs may need several access doors or removable clean-out panels so the owner can reach every corner without crawling through the animal route.

Outdoor metalwork does not replace climate protection

Send the seasonal high and low temperatures, sun direction, prevailing rain and wind, flood or snow risk and whether the location is coastal. Roof coverage should provide useful dry and shaded areas while retaining safe ventilation. Clear panels can block wind or rain but may increase solar heat; a fully exposed mesh roof may fail to provide shelter. The local housing plan must include an appropriate response to extreme weather and emergencies.

Guinea pigs and rabbits should not simply be left in an outdoor run because the frame is durable. The keeper remains responsible for monitoring conditions, moving animals where required and providing safe companionship, hiding, food, water and enrichment.

Fixed, modular or mobile run

Fixed modular system

Best when the site has a prepared permanent zone

Rigid numbered panels can connect a defined shelter, roof and ground boundary. The local installer verifies foundation, anchoring, drainage and final gap control.

Movable run

Useful only when relocation remains secure

A lighter unit may rotate across suitable ground, but lifting points, stability, predator boundary, animal transfer and new gaps at every position need a safe routine.

A one-piece welded run can be rigid but quickly becomes difficult to transport. Export projects normally benefit from modules sized to the receiving route. Joint plates and fasteners must remain outside harmful contact where possible and should be easy to inspect after each move or reassembly.

304 stainless steel, natural or powder-coated

Bật Mạnh can discuss natural-finish 304 stainless steel or powder-coated 304 stainless steel when colour is preferred. The quote should distinguish frame, mesh, sheet, hinges, locks and purchased hardware, then identify solid floor, roof or shelter materials separately. Powder coating does not turn every accessory into stainless steel, and a 304 frame does not make timber, sealants or bedding part of the same material claim.

Chewing contact, urine, wet bedding, cleaning agents and outdoor exposure all influence finishing and maintenance. Smooth animal-facing edges, replaceable wear components and drainage are more important than a vague claim that one material never needs care.

Daily use and emergency access

Feeding and waterAccess without leaving the main door open or contaminating resources with roof runoff and waste.
CleaningDoors, removable sections and tool reach sized for bedding changes and inspection.
Temporary separationA safe way to hold animals while one zone is cleaned or repaired.
HandlingRetrieval routes that do not force a frightened animal into an inaccessible corner.
InspectionVisible joints, locks, floor edges and roof interfaces checked routinely.
EmergencyRapid access during heat, flooding, predator damage, illness or fire without relying on dismantling the run.

What to send for a custom-run review

  1. Animals: rabbit or guinea-pig species/type, number, adult size, age and social grouping.
  2. Welfare brief: required usable area, shelter, floor, companionship, enrichment and any veterinary needs.
  3. Site: dimensioned photographs, climate, sun, rain, wind, drainage, soil and predator risks.
  4. Connected shelter: its dimensions, materials, doorway and whether Bật Mạnh or a local supplier provides it.
  5. Boundary: floor/perimeter concept, mesh opening, roof, doors, locks and clean-out access.
  6. Construction: fixed, modular or movable; natural or powder-coated 304 preference.
  7. Local responsibility: ground works, anchoring, insulation, weatherproofing and regulatory approval.
  8. Delivery route: destination, smallest opening and receiving/assembly capability.

Email the brief to nguyenbatmanh@gmail.com. Compare package and assembly trade-offs in the welded-versus-modular guide, then use the custom enclosure quote checklist. A quotation will identify confirmed fabricated modules and keep shelter, ground and local-installation assumptions visible.
