A useful catio is not simply a large mesh box. It is a secure outdoor room connected to the cat's indoor territory, with a reviewed structure, controlled openings, comfortable routes, shade, shelter, enrichment and practical human access. Bật Mạnh is developing made-to-measure 304 stainless steel catio systems for defined windows, balconies and gardens.
Every site connection changes the design. Bật Mạnh can review the fabricated frame, mesh, clear or solid panels, doors and modular joints. The building owner and qualified local trades remain responsible for the supporting structure, waterproofing, safe anchoring and permissions at the destination.
Why international cat owners consider a catio
A catio can give a cat controlled access to outdoor sights, scents and fresh air while reducing free roaming and escape. The Cats Protection catio guide describes formats from window boxes to larger structures and stresses that a cat should be able to retreat indoors. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association likewise supports controlled outdoor access when the individual cat's safety, health and welfare are considered.
A catio does not replace a suitable indoor environment. Cats still need safe resting places, separated resources, opportunities to climb, scratch, hide, play and avoid unwanted interaction. A nervous, elderly, disabled or multi-cat household may need different routes and shelf arrangements from an active young cat.
Four site formats require different decisions
| Format | Potential fabricated scope | Main site question |
|---|---|---|
| Window catio | Compact framed enclosure, service panel and a controlled connection at a suitable opening. | Can the window, sill and surrounding wall support the loads without compromising weather sealing or emergency use? |
| Balcony enclosure | Measured mesh or clear-panel modules, roof/interface panels and a secure human-access arrangement. | What are the balcony's structural, wind, drainage, fire-escape and building-management restrictions? |
| Wall-connected garden catio | Modular frame, roof, door, shelves and a tunnel or pet-door interface to the home. | How will the structure meet the wall, ground and roof while remaining dry, anchored and escape-resistant? |
| Freestanding garden pen | Rigid panel kit, covered zone, human door and enrichment supports for a defined location. | How will the cat return to a safe indoor retreat? Cats Protection does not recommend a freestanding pen that leaves a cat confined outside without free retreat access. |
Escape control is a complete-envelope check
Mesh strength and opening size matter, but a cat can escape at the weakest transition rather than through the main panel. The review must include the floor perimeter, roof, wall connection, door threshold, tunnel, drain openings, panel joints and gaps created when a removable part is operated. Openings also need to exclude relevant predators and prevent a paw, collar or limb becoming trapped.
- Specify the number, adult size, mobility, climbing ability and behaviour of the cats.
- Identify whether wildlife, dogs or other neighbourhood animals can reach the enclosure.
- Use strong, corrosion-appropriate mesh or bars with protected cut edges and controlled joints.
- Choose door latches that cannot be released by the cat and that remain practical for daily care.
- Consider a secondary door, internal lobby or operating routine where the escape consequence is high.
- Inspect after delivery and assembly for transport distortion, new gaps and loose fasteners before access is allowed.
The local structure cannot be guessed from photographs
A balcony guard, rendered wall, timber deck, masonry wall and lightweight roof are not interchangeable supports. Wind, people leaning on the frame, cats jumping onto shelves, roof loads, corrosion exposure and maintenance all affect the connections. Bật Mạnh can dimension and label fabricated modules after receiving site information, but a competent local person must verify the building, anchors and local requirements.
For a balcony, do not drill into waterproofing, balustrades or a shared building envelope without written approval. Do not obstruct required drainage, ventilation, rescue access or fire egress. A catio attached above ground needs a deliberate installation and inspection plan; “stainless steel” by itself does not make an unsupported connection safe.
Plan the cat's experience as well as the frame
The FelineVMA environmental-needs resources emphasise safe places, climbing and perching opportunities, play, scratching and separated resources. A useful catio brief can translate those needs into removable or adjustable features:
Natural-finish or powder-coated 304 stainless steel
Bật Mạnh can discuss a visible natural stainless surface or a powder-coated colour finish over the specified 304 stainless steel structure. Customers who want the enclosure to coordinate with a house, garden or balcony may prefer colour; others prefer the metallic finish. The quotation should identify the 304 frame, bars or mesh scope, coated faces, colour and texture, plus every acrylic, glass, roof sheet, seal, shelf surface, lock and anchor supplied in another material.
Cat-accessible surfaces need smooth finishing and a care plan. A coating is not automatically suitable merely because the colour is attractive, and natural 304 is corrosion resistant rather than maintenance-free. State whether the site is coastal, beside a pool, fully exposed or regularly washed. Read the finish-comparison guide for the component and inspection questions that carry across to catios.
Cleaning and drainage should be designed in
Leaves, hair, food, litter and rainwater should not accumulate in inaccessible corners. The design should preserve existing drainage, keep waste away from building cavities and allow shelves or protection panels to be removed without opening an escape route. Materials selected for shelf tops, bedding zones and clear panels need their own cleaning instructions.
Plan how the cat is kept safely inside while the human door is open, how a sick or frightened cat can be retrieved and how a damaged panel is isolated. If the floor is natural ground, review digging, mud, parasites, toxic plants and local wildlife. If it is a hard balcony or deck, provide comfortable non-slip resting and walking surfaces rather than assuming bare metal or mesh is suitable underfoot.
Modular fabrication helps shipping but adds joints
Most international catios are too large to ship as one welded structure. A numbered set of rigid side, roof and door modules can reduce the largest carried piece. Each connection must still resist movement, preserve the agreed opening and remain inspectable after installation. Hardware quantity, tool requirements and the local assembly sequence belong in the order documentation.
Send the narrowest gate, doorway, corridor turn, lift or stair route as well as the final site. Packed dimensions cannot be inferred from the assembled dimensions. Compare the construction choices in the welded-versus-modular enclosure guide; the international ordering guide then explains drawings, packing scope, freight responsibilities and arrival inspection.
Information for a first catio feasibility review

Email nguyenbatmanh@gmail.com with these details. The custom enclosure quote checklist helps organise the complete brief. Bật Mạnh will separate the fabrication scope that can be quoted from building work and local approvals that still require confirmation.
Discuss the animal, habitat and installation site
Send the accepted species, quantity, husbandry brief, target dimensions and site photographs for an early technical review. International transport is not a standard service and remains separate from the enclosure design.
